Unshakeable Devotional - It's In The Waiting

It's In The Waiting

By: Pastor Brian Bowden, Ministries Pastor
How many of you like to wait? Okay, so just typing that question makes me laugh at the sarcasm. Lets be honest, waiting is the worst.

Waiting at Starbucks for your coffee? Nope.
Waiting in traffic...at any point… at any time? No thank you.
What about the drive-thru line while your kids are screaming in the back seat? Never!

We live in a fast-paced/hurry-up world. We’re used to having on-demand access to most things. Waiting for anything feels like a major inconvenience. Patience?? Yeah, I don’t have much of it. Here lately, I feel like God has been “helping” me develop patience and what I’m learning is that some of the greatest lessons happen while we wait. In God’s Word we learn that some of life’s greatest lessons will happen while we wait. God promises that he’ll bless us when we trust Him enough to wait.

I want to share 3 things that happen when we wait on God:

1. We grow stronger.
When we find ourselves in the waiting process, our relationship with God can grow stronger as we trust Him. He'll increase our energy, he’ll increase our faith, and he’ll strengthen our resilience to persevere.

Isaiah 40:31 (ESV)
“..but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”

When we learn to wait on God, it will cause our faith to grow. It will even cause us to hunger for Him in a way we haven’t hungered for Him before.

2. We can win the battle.
I don’t know about you but when I take matters in my own hands things can become a mess, quick! I don’t always make the best choices on my own. When we get in a hurry we take unnecessary risks, sometimes we make decisions out of emotion, and we put ourselves in situations that aren’t God’s best for our life.

Exodus 14:14 AMP "The Lord will fight for you while you keep silent and remain calm.”

I want us to think about the word calm for a second. The definition of calm is not showing or feeling nervousness, anger, or any other emotion. I don’t know about you, but that sounds pretty good to me. God promises us that when we wait on Him we will be victorious in battle, but it’s not just about waiting, he wants us to be calm while we wait.

3. God works.
While we actively wait, God actively works!
Isaiah 64:4 (NLT)
For since the world began, no ear has heard and no eye has seen a God like you,
who works for those who wait for him!

When I look back over my life, some of the hardest situations I have faced have also been the same situations that I have seen God work in a real way on my behalf. Because when I got to the end of that battle, there was no way I could look back over the struggle and not say, “God got me through that."

The truth is that every single day, we have a loving Father working on our behalf. Even in those moments when things seem to go wrong and we don’t understand, he’s making sure that everything works according to His purpose. When we choose to wait on Him, God will use those “pauses” in our life for OUR good and for HIS good. We have to trust Him. So today know that God loves you, he wants good things for you, and he has an incredible plan for your life.
