Unshakeable Devotional - Spiritual Driver's License

Spiritual Driver's License

By: Pastor Jeremiah Ziegler, Student Pastor
There are a few moments that we will simply never forget in life: getting married, our first kiss, when our kids are born. All of those are unforgettable moments. But then there are the moments we will never forget for all the wrong reasons. One of those moments for me was the first time that I got pulled over by a police officer for speeding. I was seventeen and was working at the time for a landscaping company, driving the owner’s truck. I got pulled over for going about 18 miles per hour over the speed limit. For those of you wondering, yes I have repented for this incident. Now, an initial traffic stop is scary enough when you’re 17 but I also happened to forget my driver’s license that day and the truck I was driving in did not have the registration or insurance in the glove box. Fortunately, the police officer must have noticed how scared I was because he let me off with just a speeding ticket, when it definitely could have been a lot worse.

This got me thinking - the reality is that a driver’s license purpose is to bring validity to who we say we are. It is confirmation that we are a citizen and of our identity. I want to submit that we all carry around a spiritual driver’s license that confirms our identity. That license contains the things that we think and say about ourselves. Do we really know who we are in Christ. Does that license confirm what God says about us? Or are we submitting to other people’s definitions of who are and forgetting all that Jesus paid for us to have? Which leads us to the question: who are we?

I love this verse in Ephesians 1:5 says in the Message Version:

“Long, long ago he decided to adopt us into his family through Jesus Christ.“

How wonderful it is that we get to be considered in the family of God. That is the identity that Jesus paid for us to have. Do you believe that today? Are the things you think and say about yourself filtered through the truth that you are a son or daughter of God?

Here are some steps to walk into the identity that we have in Christ.

Know what God’s word says we are - this requires reading the Bible everyday. The Bible is a story of how God has been planning our adoption into his family since the beginning of time through his son Jesus. In order to know who we are we must better know whose we are.

Grow into who God says we are - once we know the way God views us, we need to grow into the purpose he has for our life. This takes time and relying on Jesus. One of the benefits of being a son or daughter is that our Father wants to help us and cares enough to do so. What do you need to give over to God today? The fastest way to grow is often losing hold of the thing that won’t let you.

Show who God says we are - other people need to know our story. How we stepped out of our personal graves and into the freedom that God has for us. Who is one person that you can show your identity to today. Flash that spiritual driver’s license and let them see how beautiful it is to be a part of the family of God.
