Unshakeable Devotional - Strength in the Struggle

Strength in the Struggle

By: Pastor Brian Bowden, Ministries Pastor
We’ve all had those days (and maybe even weeks) when life just doesn’t go the way we thought it would. Our best intentions, plans and ideal week gets flipped upside down. If we’re honest I think we’d all agree the last couple of weeks have definitely not gone according to our plan. Covid-19 has shown us just how quickly things can change and reminded us of what’s really important.
See, the Bowden family is currently figuring out our “new normal”. Both Elizabeth and I work full time, our kids go to school during the day and we’re at our best with a systematic approach to life.
We have schedules, routines and plenty of activities to keep our two boys (ages 3 & 4) from destroying the house, and their parents sanity. So, being at home all day together for the next several weeks??? Not part of the plan. I’m looking forward to a little offspring distancing when all is said and done. All the fellas said “amen”! In the grand scheme of things, a few weeks of inconvenience isn't that big of a deal. It  doesn’t impact life or eternity all that much. All in all it’s up to me to make the best of it, but what about those longer seasons? The loss of a job, health challenges, financial stress, strain in our marriages and other ongoing life events can seem overwhelming. Sometimes, we just feel like giving up. The truth is that struggles in life are inevitable, but defeat? I believe that’s optional. Struggles can break us or build us, it’s all in our perspective.

For us to have strength through our struggle we have to remind ourselves:
  • Character is stronger than Circumstance.
We can’t always control what happens to us, but we can control how we choose to respond! In those moments we must choose to stop complaining and instead give thanks to God for the good in our lives. Over time, the parts that seem bad start to seem much less significant and now our eyes are focused on what matters most. Make the daily choice to keep a positive attitude and thankful heart regardless of what you’re going through.
“Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18

  • Struggle leads to Strength
Every difficulty in your life whether big or small, is something God will use to produce more strength, faith and perseverance in you if you let Him! I believe that our pain can have a purpose. Ask any athlete, struggle leads to strength.

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28

  • God is by your side.
You may feel like you’re going through this struggle all alone, but you’re not. From the moment you become part of the family of God He’s by your side until the end, so never lose hope!
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6

You’re not facing this alone.
You’re strong in the struggle!

Coming out of this stronger spiritually and united as a family is the plan! Things can get rocky don’t get me wrong but remembering that we are not in this alone, is so necessary. God has us in the palm of His loving hand ! He is and has been paving the road ahead. We all may or may not be facing similar struggles right now but waking up to today’s Bible Verse was amazing and all Him ❤️

“My God will use His glorious riches to give you everything you need. He will do this through Christ Jesus” Philippians 4:19 Keep your eyes on Jesus, He gots us.
