Unshakeable Devotional - Perseverance Parenting

Perseverance Parenting

By: Danielle Ziegler, Nursery/Preschool Coordinator
God has always been the example of a parent I want to be. As a mother, I know that it’s difficult to push through hard times with our children and follow the example of God’s love. I believe that it is important to remember that God has created each of us to endure difficult times and he is faithful to turn ashes to beauty. We get the opportunity to share our testimony through these times to help build up faith and hope in others.
My oldest son, Elijah, recently learned how to ride his bike without training wheels. Exciting, I know. This process wasn’t easy though, he cried and wanted to give up. My immediate instinct was to protect my son from skinned knees and a hurt ego. I wanted to throw those training wheels back on, stop the crying, and enjoy an evening with my family. Instead, I knelt down and told my son that it takes hard work and practice but we have to keep trying and pushing ourselves to the result we want. I realized in that moment that instead of parenting out of fear I had to parent out of the love and grace God has given me so freely. Taking this moment, as little as it may seem, to my 5 year old it was an impossible task. He was fearful, exhausted, and honestly annoyed the majority of the time. But when he was finally able to take off on his own, the joy that took over him was overwhelming.
As parents, we can't protect our children from anything bad ever happening to them but we can prepare them for challenges that will come. Romans 5:3-4 tells us to rejoice in trials we face knowing this produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope! When we face difficult things in our life, we have a choice. We have the option of giving up or we can choose to grow. When we choose to grow through challenging times, our character changes. We become stronger, more confident, steadfast, and full of hope! We have the opportunity to be an example to our children and set the tone of how to handle difficult circumstances.
Parents, let's be the loudest voice in our child’s life right now where there are so many influences surrounding them. We are the best example of perseverance in the midst of uncertainty. Remember the kind of hope that can come from such small moments. When you push through the hard times with them, they will learn to do this on their own. I know it’s not an easy task, but seeing the hope in your child grow, and your hope growing with them is so rewarding. I know that Elijah was thankful for the end result as he was making laps around our cul-de-sac and sharing his accomplishment with anyone who had a pair of ears. That is what hope does, you can’t help share what God has done in the midst of a difficult circumstance.

Love you guys!
