Unshakeable Devotional - Light in the Dark, The Heart of Volunteering

Light in the Dark, The Heart of Volunteering

By: Leah Ferguson, Church Administrator
Isaiah 58:10 - “And if you spend yourselves on behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the day.”

Volunteers all over the world use their time, talents and resources to join in building God’s kingdom here on earth. And right now, volunteers are risking their lives to serve. To a volunteer, helping others, going on missions trips, or getting involved in the community is the natural thing to do. Volunteering unlocks the potential that God places on peoples’ lives. From creativity, to leadership, to administration, God has given different gifts and talents in each and every one of us. Volunteering allows us to discover what it is that God has placed on our lives. It allows us to use and grow in these gifts, in order to glorify God, and help serve people as we build His house.

1 Peter 4:10 says, “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”

When we use the gifts and talents God gave us for His glory, we feel a sense of purpose and accomplishment that we can’t get anywhere else. A volunteer with a true servant’s heart will say, “We will matter even when nothing seems to matter, and we will have light, even when it feels like there is darkness all around.”

In Isaiah 6, God asked for a volunteer. Verse 8 says, “Then I heard the Lord asking, “Whom shall I send as a messenger to the people? Who will go for us?” Isaiah didn’t hesitate. He said, “Here I am. Send me.” He didn’t look around to see if anyone else was going to raise their hand first. He didn’t look down trying to avoid eye contact. He didn’t even think an angel would be more qualified than him. He simply volunteered because God needed someone.

God’s call for messengers still goes out. He’s still looking for volunteers to carry His message of love and hope to a desperate world. In times like these, this can simply be reaching out and checking on others. Calling your friends and family, offering words of encouragement, and asking how you can be praying for them.

Lord Jesus, thank you for all who volunteer, not for personal gain or glory, but for your glory. Those that sacrifice their time, energy and potentially their health to use their gifts and talents to help your people. Bless their lives and their families lives, and keep them safe from illness! Thank you for the gifts and talents you have given me. Show me how best to put them to use and to how to look for opportunities to take part in building your kingdom. Help us to have servants’ hearts, and to be the light in the darkness in our community and in the world! Amen.

Love y'all!
-Leah
